Between 1995 and 1997, Bernadette Corporation operated as an underground fashion label in New York, complete with a head designer and four runway shows that were well received. Drawing on the styles and slang of local subcultures—from recent immigrant communities to the downtown fashion scene—the label’s collections functioned as a deliberately critical look at social codes and how they manifest through industrial systems of power and money. The shows themselves, presented in this video as “a condensed history of anti-fashion,” satirized the fashion industry’s love of spectacle, featuring elements like bear-suited mascots, groups of high-school dancers, and bursts of fire.
